Artist’s statement

34 years of experimentation and refinement has created this collection of jewelry.  It is complete with elegant lines, rich textures and clean simple design.  I strive to refine or distill my ideas rather than just adding more elements merely to balance the design.

The inspiration comes from a growing respect for Mother Nature, the indigenous peoples who live with her, and a sense of connection that touches us all.  I admire their straightforward approach and the richness of the pieces that they use every day.  I agree with their idea of jewelry, tools, weapons, etc. as important self-defining things that give a sense of completeness, and to have these things around oneself all of the time.   My work then is to relate these interests to the modern world in which I live.

I fabricate jewelry using chisels, hammers, piercing, and a variety of other tools. Utilizing the malleable properties of the metal, through both compression and expansion to create lineal elements, surface textures, volume and form.  Another level of complexity often done is soldering two dissimilar metals together, referred to as overlay or mixed metal.

In 1976, I earned a BFA in Jewelry Making and Metalsmithing from Western Michigan University and graduated Magna cum Laude.  Since that time I have been a full-time working artist. I primarily selling through high quality nationally ranked art fairs over much of the country and  have won numerous awards.  I still very much enjoy the work and I never tire of talking to past customers and potential new customers as well.  I love the compliments that I receive like: “ these are my favorite earrings” and “I wear this bracelet every day.”
